San Francisco County Information

San Francisco County is one of the original counties in California. San Francisco and Oakland are two of its largest cities. San Francisco was originally called Yearba Buena, Spanish for "good grass," a name that took on new meaning when the hippie culture moved in during the ‘60s.

San Francisco County is home to some of the most often photographed real estate in the world. The most famous of the Victorian Painted Ladies, a stand of colorful Victorian homes across from Alamo Square, are often used as backdrops for photos or for location shots in movies. The Golden Gate Bridge is another landmark that is so closely identified with San Francisco that people won't think of leaving the area without at least a handful of photos of this magnificent structure.

Sightseeing opportunities in San Francisco County are endless. The area has the largest Chinese community in the world, outside China; and the famous cable cars that streak up and down the hills of the city are the only moving National Historic Landmarks in the world. For the more down-to-earth, the downtown Jackson Square Historic District is built on landfill created by ships abandoned by gold-seekers in the San Francisco Bay and it's where you'll find the only surviving buildings that were part of the original city. Now filled with trendy shops and eateries, the area is a wonderful way to absorb some of the history and flavor of the city during the gold-rush era while you shop and dine in modern comfort.
