San Joaquin County Information
San Joaquin County was incorporated in 1850 when California became a state. The county is in California's Central Valley Area, just east of San Francisco. Stockton is the county seat. Located near the San Joaquin Delta waterway, Stockton is home to the annual Asparagus Festival.
Agriculture is the foundation of the county's economy, but tourism, anchored by the growing Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission and the 80 local wineries that make up the Lodi Appellation, is making the region a vacation destination spot.
George West, a businessman who recognized the potential of the area, launched the county's first major vineyard. He became the county's first commercial vintner when he opened El Pinal Winery. With the formation of the Lodi Appellation in 1986, vintners were finally able to list Lodi as the origin of the grapes in their wines, and today the wines are ranked among some of the best in the world. The Tokay grape is a versatile grape, with a distinctly unique flame coloring, that can't be grown anyplace other than Lodi.
Shopping in the county is diverse and plentiful. There are the usual malls with anchor stores like Macy's and Dillards, but you can also visit wonderful Farmer's Markets for some of the best fruits and vegetables in the world, or stop to explore some of the small boutiques tucked away in picturesque shopping plazas. If you're more an outdoorsman, San Joaquin County has some of the most beautiful parks and preserves in the nation. Every sport you can imagine, such as whitewater rafting, hiking, swimming, and camping, are all just a short drive from the city. San Joaquin County is an amazing adventure. Put it on your list of next destination stops.
