San Mateo County Information

San Mateo County is located in the California San Francisco Bay area. It encompasses most of the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered completely on one side by the Santa Cruz Mountains. Redwood City is the county seat. Today, the county is listed as one of the 20 richest counties (based on incomes) in the United States, a fact made apparent by the number of expensive homes and summer "cottages" that have sprung up throughout the county.

An exciting and unique way to get the lay-of-the-land when you visit for the first time is aboard a Go-Car. These bright yellow go-cart-type vehicles offer GPS programs (you select the tour of your choice) that direct you to the key points of interest in the area.

Some of the prime real estate in the county is found in San Francisco. Visit the Haight-Ashbury district to see where the hippie movement took place. There are some great shops, clubs, and restaurants in the area that display memorabilia of the "summer of love." Wear comfortable shoes, and you can grab a snack in Golden Gate Park, then work it off by walking a mile to see the famous Painted Ladies in Alamo Square.

The Fillmore District is home to The Fillmore Jazz Festival and hosts a number of fine jazz clubs. Japantown offers the best of Asian cuisine and tradition. The Peace Pagoda is a must-see as you wander among the shops and restaurants in this area known as the Western Addition. The Presidio, at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, is another must-see for its mix of parks, shops, and cafes. Suffice it to say, there is so much to see in San Mateo County that a week is not enough…in fact, you may want to stay.
