Lake County Information

Lake County, Illinois was founded in 1839. Libertyville was the original county seat, but it was moved to Waukegan in 1841. Anchored by several upscale, affluent communities, including the metropolitan Chicago area, Lake County is the 31st richest county in the United States.

You're probably all familiar with the yummy soft-serve ice cream treat served up by Dairy Queens all over the United States, but not many people realize that it was invented here in Lake County. And ice cream isn't the only treat being offered in this busy, metropolitan county. The area residents love festivals, so the county has a regular slate of events on the calendar year-round—everything from apple picking to gardening is reason to celebrate the seasons. If you consider great shopping a treat, head over to Long Grove Historic Village. This little gem has nearly a hundred picturesque shops and restaurants, and it exudes the elegance of the early 19th Century. Downtown Libertyville is another unique shopping experience that will leave you longing for the good ‘ol days.

Is shopping too sedate for your tastes? Lake County has 25,000 acres of parkland and 75 lakes to entertain the most active outdoor enthusiast. This is a four-season area, so there are great activity choices all year long. In the summer, you can swim, kayak, fish, or hike some amazing trails; and in the winter, there are snowmobiling trails for the big kids and sledding hills for the little ones.

If you like your entertainment inside, there are numerous museums and art galleries to explore; and a number of amazing theaters that offer Broadway shows, musicals, concerts, and a host of world class entertainers. Come visit Lake County, and let the entertainment begin.
