Jefferson County Information

Jefferson County, Kentucky was founded in 1780. Louisville-Jefferson County Metro is its county seat. It is by far the most populous county in the state. Horse breeding and racing are part of the heart and soul of Jefferson County. The Kentucky Derby, the oldest annual horse race in the United States, is held in Louisville at Churchill Downs. The opening festivities for the race are a draw for tourists from all over the world. The fireworks display, "Thunder Over Louisville," is billed as the largest display of its kind in the world.

Horses aren't the only sports in Jefferson County. The area has a fine AAA minor-league baseball team, The Louisville Bats, which is the affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds. The Louisville Slugger Museum is a great way to revisit the early years of the all-American game, but it is also a working factory where all of the official major league baseball bats have been made since 1884. The county also has its fair share of traditional museums, with exhibits that showcase both famous artists and local talent.

There are endless options for a night on the town. The area has many dance clubs and comedy clubs for the more conservative visitor; but if you're a risk-taker, give one of the local mystery theaters a try, or belt out your favorite tune in a karaoke bar. Accommodations in the area are plentiful—four-star hotels, a cross-section of well-known motel chains, and some really quaint bed and breakfasts are available year-round. There are hundreds of elegant restaurants in the county with a full array of ethnic meal choices—whether you're looking for gourmet dining, or down-home country food, you won't have to look far. And if you're looking for down-home Southern hospitality, look no further than Jefferson County.
