Montgomery County, Maryland is mixture of uptown sophistication and outdoor fun on the footsteps of the United States Capital. Montgomery County is home to the C&O Canal National Historic Park. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is now a linear park which allows visitors to experience "the Grand Old Ditch" by hiking, biking, canoeing, or camping. Many of Montgomery County's historic sites are along the canal including the Great Falls Tavern Museum, and other sites. Montgomery County is rich with Civil War history and has many extensive trails and tours for visitors. Maryland Civil War Trails and the Underground Railroad Experience begin in Montgomery County, Maryland, and go through many of its historic towns including Poolesville and Sugarloaf Mountain, stopping at places such as The Josiah Henson Site which was the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. The Silver Spring Heritage Trail explores Montgomery County's local history and gives visitors a deeper insight into this fascinating county.

The arts and culture have always been well represented in Montgomery County. It is the childhood home of F. Scott Fitzgerald who is buried at the historic Saint Mary's Cemetery. Glen Echo Park, established as an 1891 National Chautauqua Assembly, has the Spanish Ballroom and Dentzel Carousel. Montgomery County is home to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Foundation and Library. For those who like to mix fine dining and entertainment, Sugar Loaf Mountain produces award winning Bordeaux-style wines and holds many art events throughout the year. A notable architectural landmark that attracts visitors all year round is the gold-spire, marble clad Washington D.C. Temple, surrounded by award-winning gardens and reflecting pool. It is especially beautiful in December during the Festival of Lights.
