Allegheny County Information

As the center of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, Allegheny County is Pennsylvania's second most populated county. The county is located in the southwestern portion of the state, and three rivers converge here: the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio River, which is formed by the two previous waterways. The area is also home to two State Parks. Point State Park is in downtown Pittsburgh and is a popular destination for joggers, picnickers, sightseers, and others. With its iconic fountain, it is also the location of concerts and several of the city's major festivals. The other park is Allegheny Islands State Park, but at present, it is undeveloped and only accessible by boat. It does provide space for campers and organizations, however, such as the Scouts.

As the core of the metropolitan area, Allegheny County and Pittsburgh also offer all the amenities of big city life. Once an agricultural area, heavy industry (namely steel production) took over in the early 20th Century and propelled the county to its present urbanized state. While manufacturing and industry still play an important role in the economy, they have declined, and heath care and higher education have become prominent. In fact, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh is the oldest of its kind in the nation, and there are several other notable educational facilities in the area as well. Finally, you can't talk about Pittsburgh without mentioning pro sports. This is Steeler country, and you'll find hard-core football fans throughout the county. This franchise is one of the oldest, and it has won more Super Bowl titles than any other team. In addition to football, there are also the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL).
