Bexar County Information

Bexar (pronounced "bear") County, in southern Texas, is an area of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural diversity. The San Antonio River, which originates in the city named after it, is probably the area's best known geographic feature and plays an important role in providing natural beauty and supporting the local economy by way of the River Walk. The San Antonio River Walk is one of the most visited places in the County; this three mile long section of the waterway is lined with shops, restaurants, and clubs and is extremely popular among locals and tourists. Guided boat tours are also available along the San Antonio River, and this is another popular attraction. During the spring, the city hosts the Fiesta San Antonio, which is a multi-day event featuring parades, food, music, and more.

Of course, Bexar County is also known as the home of the Alamo, the Spanish mission and fortress where the famed Battle of the Alamo was fought in 1836. The site is now a popular attraction that hosts millions of visitors each year. There are also other missions and museums showcasing the local history, and these are scattered throughout the County. The San Antonio Museum of Art offers another cultural facet for people to enjoy and offers collections of art from all over the world, including the work of local artists. Other big draws for the County include SeaWorld and Six Flags, both in San Antonio. A final point worth mentioning is the military presence in the County. With four Air Force bases, an Army medical center, and an Army post, Bexar County is home to thousands of servicemen and women.
